Placement Target Modes Explained

The Placement Tool features several target modes to accommodate various asset-selection scenarios. Below are the available modes, along with descriptions and key settings.

Random Weighted Selection

  • Purpose:

    • Chooses a random asset for each placement, using per‑asset weights to bias the probability.

  • Ideal For:

    • Varying repeated props with controlled frequency (e.g., foliage or debris).

    • Procedural setups where some assets should appear more often than others.

  • Key Settings:

    • Asset Weight: Set per entry to influence selection probability.

    • Random Seed: Ensures deterministic results across sessions if desired.

    • Reroll Hotkey: Immediately picks another random asset.

  • Optional Settings:

    • Reroll can be triggered manually at any time to preview alternative assets.

Keep Index Selection

  • Purpose:

    • Locks placement to a specific asset index until changed manually.

  • Ideal For:

    • Repeatedly placing the same asset without random variation.

    • Manually stepping through a list to audition assets.

  • Key Settings:

    • Current Linear Index: Specifies which asset to use.

    • Next/Previous Hotkeys: Cycle indices directly from the viewport.

  • Optional Settings:

    • Wrap Cycle: Allows cycling to loop back to the start or end when navigating beyond bounds.

Cycle Selection

  • Purpose:

    • Automatically advances to the next asset in the list with each placement.

  • Ideal For:

    • Creating patterned layouts where assets should appear in a predictable order.

    • Rapidly iterating through a sequence of props or decals.

  • Key Settings:

    • Starting Index: Defines the initial point in the sequence.

    • Next/Previous Hotkeys: Manually move forward or backward through the cycle.

  • Optional Settings:

    • Wrap Cycle: Enables looping at the ends.

    • Reroll Hotkey: Temporarily overrides the cycle with a random pick if desired.

Reroll On-Demand Selection

  • Purpose:

    • Keeps the current asset until a manual reroll chooses a new one.

  • Ideal For:

    • Situations where you want a stable default asset but occasionally swap it out.

    • Controlled randomization at specific times.

  • Key Settings:

    • Reroll Hotkey: Selects a new asset either weighted or uniformly at random.

    • Random Seed: Reproduces the same sequence of rerolls.

    • Unique Reroll: Option to guarantee the new pick differs from the current one.

  • Optional Settings:

    • Disable unique reroll if repeats are acceptable.

Each target mode is easily selectable in the tool’s settings panel. Adjust the associated variables to match your project’s requirements.
